Kaffir Lime / Pomegranate / Floral
Every time we visit Kenya, the Gachatha cooperative continually stands out from the pack. It’s a wonderfully distinctive coffee that has become a mainstay in our Kenyan coffee selections.
Kenya is a specialty coffee-producing heavyweight that consistently ships out some of the most intense and complex coffees in the world. Within Africa, Kenya leads the way with advanced trade systems (the Kenyan coffee auction system is transparent and traceable) and rigorous quality control practices. Kenyan coffees tend to be fermented for extend periods of time – up to 72hrs – and dried very slowly.
Though these practices were born more out of tradition than with particular outcomes in mind, we believe that the extended fermentation enhances the fruitiness of the cup, while the slow and careful drying increases the longevity and overall quality of the coffee.
The Gachatha mill is in the renowned coffee producing hotspot of Nyeri in Central Kenya, where coffee has been harvested for over a century.
*A peaberry is a small, pea-like coffee seed that formed inside a coffee cherry where only one seed (instead of the usual two) has developed. Only about five percent of a harvest will turn out to be peaberries, and when tasted independently, they reveal their unique and intense flavour profile.
Ethiopia Haranjicho
Jasmine / Thyme / Citrus
Ethiopia is the nucleus from which coffee originated and spread throughout the world.
It is also the only coffee-producing country that grows exclusively heirloom varieties of coffee (of which there are thousands). This means that when you drink Ethiopian coffee, you are tasting varieties of Arabica that are native to the land.
Of the four mills that service the Homacho Waeno Cooperative in Sidamo, ‘Haranjicho’ is the highest, situated at a dizzying 2300m. Last year we received an outstanding blended lot from all four Homacho Waeno mills, so this year we’re very excited about the Haranjicho – it’s the separation of the coffee from our favourite of the four mills. Expect complex florals and citrus from this one.
